Upgrading the Next-generation Network Part II

Layer 5 Core SIP Routing

The second paper in this multi-part series examines the drivers and benefits of Tekelec's layer 5 SIP routing solution for nextgeneration networks.

Upgrading the Next-generation Network Part II

Unlike the circuit-switched network, there is no separate infrastructure at the NGN core to facilitate signaling between network elements. Network elements utilize direct signaling connections, forming a mesh-like network architecture. The NGN cannot be properly expanded without creating a suitable session framework that is capable of off-loading signaling and session tasks from the edge NGN elements. This paper, the second in a multipart series, addresses:

  • Session management in NGN networks
  • Analyzing the OSI model to identify IP and SIP routing requirements
  • Deploying the SIP signaling router to enable session-layer routing
  • Improving routing and service flexibility with SIP routing
