Upgrading the Next-generation Network Part I

The first paper in this multi-part series provides an overview of Tekelec's solution for SIP signaling and session control in next-generation networks.

The popularity of VoIP is increasing, driving the need to expand the bearer and signaling capacity of next-generation networks. The current, softswitch-based NGN, which has no core-signaling infrastructure, creates scalability and availability issues, increases routing and service complexity, increases operations costs, and limits network interoperability and evolution. This paper, the first in a multipart series, covers:

• The current VoIP NGN architecture
• Expanding the NGN with a centralized, SIP signaling and control layer

• Bringing IMS capability to NGNs with the SIP signaling router
• Bridging TDM, NGN and IMS domains
