This paper explores the expected future for messaging and how operators can remain relevant with the launch of new IP-based messaging services.
Over the past several years, the mobile network operator (MNO) driven world of tightly integrated, closed messaging systems has started to crumble. External factors such as the launch of the iPhone, App Stores and social networks (SNs) have accelerated mobile data usage and will most likely impact MNO messaging revenues.
The future business model that will dominate messaging usage and revenues is unclear. MNOs are searching for answers to questions such as, “Social networks: friend or foe?” and “What IP-based technology should I implement?”
This paper provides insight into the rise of mobile data services, market drivers, likely messaging business models and architectural options that will dominate in the future. The move to all-IP networks and how MNOs can regain control over message services and stabilize revenues are also discussed.
